GOK-SEONG (곡성): Third Film Coming From Director Of THE CHASER And THE YELLOW SEA

Andrew Mack, Contributing Writer
Na Hong-jin, director of lauded Korean thrillers The Chaser and The Yellow Sea, is prepping his third feature film, Gok-seong, or The Wailing

Fox International Pictures is backing the film. Fox Korea, which handles distribution of 20th Century Fox films in Korea, is working with the production. Filming should begin by the end of this year, with aims to release in early 2015. Fox distributed The Yellow Sea in Korea and North America back in 2010

The film will star Kwak Do-wan (The Attorney and The Yellow Sea) and Hwang Jeong-min (The New World and Private Eye). One report suggests that Kitano Takeshi's name is floating around casting circles. Actress Cheon Woo-hee joins the production in the role of 'Anonymous'.

Kwak will play a police officer called to a village to investigate a mysterious rumor. Hwang is reportedly a shaman who helps him. One source says that the incident occurs when a Japanese citizen visits the village.

Kitano as a potential serial killer already makes this a "must see" film for me.

I felt that Yellow Sea had very little of The Chaser's energy. It seemed a bit generic by comparison. Still, glad the guy is getting another shot. Fingers crossed for something great.

"Generic" is a bit harsh, but after a spectacular first hour it just starts to lose quite a bit of steam. Cutting 15 or so minutes worth of fat here and there would've done miracles. It's indeed not in The Chaser's league but a great fucking film nonetheless.

You guys are both crazy. The Yellow Sea was a more mature, all around superior film.
