Watch COMMANDO's Vidyut Jamwal In The First Teaser For Suriya's ANJAAN

J Hurtado, Contributing Writer
Tamil film superstar Suriya is back for the first time since the disastrous Singam 2 with a new film directed by N. Lingusamy titled Anjaan. Normally, this information on its own would be enough to get my excited. Suriya is a major talent in search of the right role, which he has managed to avoid landing over the last five years. There's no guarantee that Anjaan (which translates to Fearless in English) will be the performance that gives him the credit he is due, but there are a couple of helpful circumstances that stand to give him a better chance than usual.

Anjaan's director, Lingusamy, has at least two decent pictures under his belt, 2010's Paiyaa, and 2011's Vettai. Now, Suriya has worked with high profile directors on high concept failures before, so that's no guarantee. His role as a reincarnated Bodhidharma in AR Murugadoss's 7 Aam Arivu suffered from a bloated storyline and over reliance on popular film tropes and his role as kung fu fighting conjoined twins somehow managed to flounder in KV Anand's Maatraan. However, he has just as many successes as failures, and this time around he has a solid troupe both in front of and behind the camera.

Suriya is often left to fend for himself as the main lead of his films, but this time around they've called in some up and comers to fill in some of the ancillary roles. First up is Twitch favorite and martial arts fighter of the future, Vidyut Jamwal, of Fantastic Fest 2013 favorite Commando: A One Man Army. Jamwal hasn't done much of note since Commando apart from a bit role in Saif Ali Khan's Bullett Raja, so it's time he came back in a big way. Also backing Suriya is the starlet of SS Rajamouli's Eega, Samantha Prabhu. Both performers cross language barriers to land themselves in this Tamil feature. But perhaps the biggest coup for Lingusamy is nabbing one of India's finest cinematographers, Santosh Sivan, to shoot the thing. Even in movies that aren't that great (Murugadoss's Thuppakki), Sivan's photography is always stunning.

As is usually the case, there isn't much to be gleaned from the teaser in terms of plot, but at least UTV have helpfully subtitled for us non-Tamilians, so there's that. Once again I'm getting myself excited for a Suriya film after the devastating let down of Singam 2. I'm not sure I can get my heart broken again, but I'm willing to give the guy another chance, he has greatness in him. Anjaan is scheduled to hit cinema screens on August 15th.
