Showtime Renews Gothic Horror PENNY DREADFUL For Second Season
Good news coming out of Cable TV land. THR reported earlier today that Showtime has renewed its Gothic horror series Penny Dreadful for a second season. The first season just reached the midway point in its inaugural eight episode season. The second season will round up to ten episodes. The show was created and written by John Logan. He also stands in as the show's executive producer along with Sam Mendes.
Penny Dreadful stars Eva Green, Timothy Dalton and Josh Hartnett. The trio encounter horrors in the streets of Victorian London; including Frankenstein's Monster, Dorian Gray and Dracula. The show also stars Billie Piper, Rory Kinnear, Harry Treadaway, Reeve Carney and Danny Sapani.
According to the report and summary of the show's ratings success since its debut four weeks ago the network plans a big to-do at Comic-Con this Summer. Fans of the show will get a real taste of the marketing machine then as merchandise including book box-sets (of actual "penny dreadful" novels maybe?) and tarot cards are unveiled."The show has been an interesting combination of genre credibility -- it is simultaneously a gorgeous historical costume drama and a really scary, twisted horror show," said Showtime president David Nevins. "The question was, could we do a genre show that made sense on Showtime that had adult appeal and the psychological sophistication you expect from one of our premium dramas, but still satisfies drama audiences. John Logan has delivered on both."
