Teaser: Miike Brings Classic Horror Back To Life In OVER YOUR DEAD BODY

Patryk Czekaj, Contributing Writer
It's about time for another dose of Miike Takashi madness! Japan's bad-boy helmer returns with Over Your Dead Body (喰女-クイメ-), a theatrical twist on Tsuruya Nanboku IV's Yotsuya Kaidan, a now legendary Japanese ghost tale that blends murder, betrayal, and revenge in a most ghastly manner. Originally a triumphant kabuki play, Yotsuya Kaidan has had (there are over 30 film adaptations) and still has an enormous influence on Japanese horror genre.

On the border between reality and fiction, Over Your Dead Body revolves around a pair of actors-sweethearts (Shibasaki Kou and Ichikawa Ebizo) playing main parts in the aforementioned famed stage play. Soon their love is going to be violently tested and, as the moody and bizarre teaser trailer suggests, things are about to turn ugly and deadly. Here's the film's synopsis (via Eigapedia):

An actor named Kosuke plays the role of Iemon in a stage version of Yotsuya Kaiden and his new lover Miyuki plays Oiwa. However, as they delve deeper into their respective performances, the line between fantasy and reality becomes obscured until the murderous, vengeful themes of the play bleed into their own relationship.

Over Your Dead Body is set to premiere in Japan on August 23. Check out the teaser below!

Awesome. From wild over-the-top manga adaptation/comedy to horror/psychological thriller...Miike is one hell of a versatile filmmaker. It's nice to be reminded of that.

Yes indeed he is. But it seems that last few years he made more loud over the top manga stuff than the more subtle Miike stuff I like so much. (Although I loved his musical For Love's Sake!)

His next movie will be "As the Gods Will", which is a horror film adapted from a manga. Two birds with one stone.

What I also liked about Miike is his collaborations with previous cast members. Some were expected, but some are surprising, like with Kou Shibasaki, since One Missed Call more than 10 years ago.

Even in "As the Gods Will", Ryunosuke Kamiki works with Miike again after "The Great Yokai War", almost ten years ago.

Looks like Takashi Miike is going back to gonzo mode, with a yakuza film, mixed with vampires?!?!!? Awesome!

“Take a hike, boring Japanese productions! Against everyone’s wishes,
I’m going back to my roots on this one, and plan to go on a real rampage
with Yakuza Apocalypse. I hope my cast and crew, and even myself make it out alive,” said the controversial director.

Looks awesome! Miike is always a wonderful surprise, no matter what he's doing. :)
