Watch The Red Band Trailer For Ti West's THE SACRAMENT

Todd Brown, Founder and Editor
House of the Devil and The Innkeepers director Ti West broadens his palette with his latest effort, The Sacrament, a dark tale of starkly realistic religious fanaticism. Here's the how the Toronto International Film Festival described the film at its premiere:

Patrick (Kentucker Audley) is a fashion photographer. When his colleagues Sam (AJ Bowen) and Jake (Joe Swanberg), correspondents for Vice magazine, catch wind of a letter he received from his estranged sister Caroline (Amy Seimetz), they decide her story would be a great subject for a documentary -- she's living in a "sober" commune at an unnamed location outside the United States.

The three set off for a visit. While Patrick reunites with his sister, Sam and Jake investigate why members of the isolated community have followed a mysterious leader they call Father off American soil. Understandably skeptical at first, the guys slowly come around to the group's utopian claims.

The Sacrament is West's powerful take on suicide cults, and it shows a deep understanding of the hold a leader can have over a trusting populace. The film's charismatic Father is a clear stand-in for the infamous Jim Jones, who led hundreds to a mass suicide at Jonestown in 1978.

Following up his atmospheric earlier films, West employs some familiar techniques here but takes it to the next level, teasing out beautifully naturalistic performances from his four leads (and long-time collaborators), and compelling documentary-style realism from the hundred extras that make up the inhabitants of the commune.

A brand new red band trailer for the film has just arrived, check it below.

Disappointed to find out it's a "found footage" format, was hoping for a straight dramatic film. I'll also chime in with my disdain for Eli Roth.

  • Fistacuffs

I wouldn't really say it's "found footage". More of a faux documentary.

  • cuckoozey

You're right, mockumentary. That genre requires very good actors to pull it off and from this trailer it looks like they didn't get them. Hope I'm wrong.

    PS: Nice Kenny Powers avatar.

  • Fistacuffs

Thanks lol. I hate using the term mockumentary. Just doesn't sound right for this time of movie. I saw the film at TIFF though and I enjoyed it. Gene Jones was incredible in it, but you might be annoyed by some of the other actors. I didn't mind them though.

  • Great trailer! As a huge Ti West fan (ignoring his asshole ABC's entry) I cannot wait to see this!

  • Todd Harrington

Not a big Roth fan, but I LOVE Ti West. He might be the only director out there who can lure me into a (semi?) found-footage film.

  • Elsie Paroubek

I despise directors that ask other directors to "present" their film. More so when it's a talentless twat (Roth).
