Trailer: GODZILLA Is Pure Gravitas

Ben Umstead, East Coast Editor
Woah. And... woah...

The new trailer for Gareth Edwards' take on Godzilla arrived today and it sure knows how to instill a bit of fear in the hearts of us measly mammals. Over some starkly terrifying shots of destroyed cities we've got a bit of Bryan Cranston demanding answers for what was "not an earthquake or typhoon." As the images build, sprinkling more human faces into the disaster, Ken Watanabe actually gives reference to Godzilla's origins, and I mean he says "1954". Chills, people, chills. But what is so impressive about this trailer is that Edwards has created a sense of scale and space that is really awe inspiring and unsettling, putting perspective on how small we really are, not just in the universe, but on the planet we live on... not the planet we own or run... clearly. Pacific Rim never achieved that kind of perspective. Then again that was intentionally a cartoon, and this is... not.

Godzilla opens in most parts of the world May 15th and 16th (U.S. included).

Pacific Rim was a piece of shit. Didn't give justice to Japanese Gundams. This Godzilla trailer feels Japanese even though it's an entirely white cast save for token Ken Watanabi (why can't they pick somebody else but him??) Anyways I look forward to seeing this!

Can't. Wait. Gareth Edwards is a stud.

Also, it looks to me like some notions from the old Rossio & Elliot Tri-Star draft have crept into this version, and -- if so -- that's a good thing. One of the best scripts (imo) they ever wrote.

  • Rage72

I'd read that script, as well as seen the amazing monster designs from the late Stan Winston way back in 1994. To tell you the truth, I liked the Winston Godzilla design better than this current design for Godzilla 2014.

Godzilla looks like Godzilla, which is important. I'm glad they kept the anthropomorphic features, such as walking upright and human per-portioned arms. What I am curious about is the villain of this movie. It's too early for me to solidify a guess, but there appeared to be some sort of creature knocking planes out of the sky just before diving in the water. I don't think it's Mothra, maybe King Ghidorah?! Seems a bit soon to be pulling the trigger on a baddy like that, but if the franchise has proved anything it's hard to keep King Ghidorah dead for long.

    it's ultraman

From what I gather, it's not Rodan, but a new kind of kaiju invented especially for the movie. Leaked info about toys talk of Muto monsters. There's expected to be one that flies, and one that walks. Something to do with how they got the rights for the Big G, but not any other kaiju from Toho.

  • Mehaillien Thundercross

I suspect you're right, maybe similar monsters without referencing specific copyrighted names.

  • Gopal Natarajan

Possibly Rodan. It looked like a bird as it dove into the water.

Man, I can't stand it when they remake more or less not-very-old films. Dudes, it was 19-fuckin-98 when "Godzilla" came out. Keep the films a bit at rest when you go huntin' for remake-worthy stuff. Darn!

  • Howard

nigga please, the only good thing about that 1998 flick was Pdiddy cripwalking to Slash

  • Yes, because clearly the 30+ Japanese Godzilla films and related spin offs have been solely concerned with artistic purity. Please ...

  • benu

My guess on the above is that it was a joke.

  • Years of working online have taught me to never underestimate the human capacity for foolish opinions poorly stated.

  • benu

I hear ya. You do know better than most. The use of 'dudes' feels like a dead giveaway to me though. So if so, obviously a poor joke. C'est la vie!

  • Mehaillien Thundercross

Has to be. An obvious one, at that.

  • stonedcommander

Please...I hope this movie is as awesome as it looks in this trailer...I am losing faith in Hollywood films, this could restore it some.

  • DJ_BobbyPeru

Being a Godzilla nut as a kid, I'm really hoping that this turns out great. Everything I've seen and read about it seems right on point. If it sucks, this would be my Phantom Menace moment. Actually, come to think of it, that was Godzilla 98'.

  • i get chills on my bone, this is it!
