Shaw Brothers Founder Sir Run Run Shaw Has Died

Sir Run Run Shaw, one of the most influential figures in the history of Hong Kong's entertainment industry, has passed away, local media is reporting this morning. The companies that he founded, Shaw Brothers (Hong Kong) and Television Broadcasting (TVB) Limited, have produced countless film and television classics and helped launched the careers of numerous filmmakers, actors and actresses.

Shaw Brothers (Hong Kong) Studio was founded in 1957, and quickly became the largest movie production company in the city. Over a number of decades, it has produced close to 1,000 movies. Key directors of the company included King Hu, Lau Kar Leung, Chang Cheh and Li Han Hsiang. Numerous wushu classics were produced and many of the studio's actors and actresses became celebrities. Some of the company's most famous films include Come Drink With Me, The One Armed Swordsman, Five Deadly Venoms, The 36th Chamber Of Shaolin and Eight Diagram Pole Fighter

TVB Broadcasting Limited was established in 1967 and remains Hong Kong's largest television broadcasting company. TVB has helped launched the careers of many of today's superstars including Chow Yun Fat, Stephen Chow, Andy Lau and Tony Leung Chiu Wai.

Sir Shaw passed away at his home earlier this morning. He was 106.
Around the Internet:
  • Sir Shaw was one of the legendary weapons of China.

R.I.P May he ascend to the heavens on a wire to an orchestral score.

  • micropop loco

RIP Mr. Shaw and thank you for all those amazing movies

  • Niels Matthijs

RIP. I'm not the biggest Shaw Bros fan, but if you're into martial arts you simply cannot ignore them.

  • Ginkoman

R.I.P Sir Run Run Shaw , your legacy includes:

    1) Blade Runner, little do ppl know that Shaw Brothers provided crucial funding to Ridley Scott and David People's odd little project that most of Hollywood backed away from.

    2) Wu-Tang Clan.

    3) Obnoxious sophomoric college neckbeard filmmakers who think they are the only ones that understand what a funny joke making a post ironic grindhouse fake dub kung fu movie is, only because they saw part 1 of Kill Bill.

    4) OH RIIIIGHT, the ENTIRETY of the modern history of Chinese Cinema AND television across the globe. nearly forgot that one.

  • Overstate much? Responsible for the entire modern history of Chinese cinema? Maybe the only stuff you've ever seen ... The man's a giant, no doubt, but Chinese cinema did just fine before him, did just fine outside of the Shaws even during their peak years, and has continued to do just fine without him. People may not know rival studio Cathay the way they do the Shaws because Cathay weren't a big martial arts company but there were LOADS of other people doing great work who broke every bit as much ground.
