Watch Donnie Yen Direct The Action In SPECIAL ID

Action director Donnie Yen is taking the fierce "Ultimate fighting" style as previously shown in the Hong Kong contemporary crime thriller SPL and Flashpoint to the next level in Clarence Fok's Special ID.  For the action design, Yen continues to incorporate a variety of Mixed Martial Arts techniques, fusing not only stand-up striking but also Brazilian jiu-jitsu and grappling to choreograph the brutal street brawl while utilizing great fighting talents such as Ken Lo (Drunken Master II), Andy On (Unbeatable) and Collin Chou (Flashpoint).

While the latest behind-the-scenes video feature an interview with the action hero himself without English subtitles, it does however showcase his action directing efforts and it looks pretty damn good. There is also an extended version of the BTS video from last week.

According to recent reports, Special ID is being planned as part of a possible film trilogy if the first film is a success and Yen has reportedly expressed the desire to invite boxing legend Mike Tyson to appear in the sequel for a duel.
Yen takes on the role of Zilong Chen, an undercover police officer deep within the ranks of one of China's most ruthless underworld gangs. The leader of the gang, Xiong (Collin Chou - JET LI'S FEARLESS, THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM, THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS, THE MATRIX RELOADED), has made it his priority to weed out the government infiltrators in his midst. Struggling to keep his family together and his identity concealed, Chen is torn between two worlds.

Upping the stakes, as Chen's undercover comrades are being dealt with, one by one, Chen fears his days are numbered. Now, he must risk everything to take down the organization and reclaim the life he lost when he took on this perilous assignment. As the action mounts, Chen must do everything he can to protect the SPECIAL IDENTITY he wishes he never had before it's too late.
The theatrical release date in China/Hong Kong has been pushed back to October 18th. You'll find two behind-the-scenes videos embedded below.

As an actor, I think he had already surpassed the realm of kung fu excitement brought to us by Bruce Lee 40 years ago, and I really appreciate his hardworking and dedication to this genre of film, Thank you Donnie Yen!

Rough translation (Mandarin is not my first language!):

    1.
    Director - One, two, three

    2.
Title – Special ID – Final Grapple – Triad Society

    3.
Donnie Yen – Producer, Action Director, Lead
    Actor

    4.
I have practiced many wushu (martial arts)
    disciplines

    5.
I pay attention to wushu’s basic concept of…

    6.
    …really hitting in that regards…

    7.
…has transformed to today’s brawling (literally
translated but meaning Mixed Martial Arts [MMA])

    8.
This brawling/MMA concept is really needed

    9.
Sha Po Lang was my first introduction of
    Brazilian martial arts and MMA

    10.
Then in Flashpoint everything went up a level
(in terms of martial arts display)

    11.
    That’s why I say…

    12.
…I want to increase the level of Special ID…

    13.
    …to a professional level of MMA…

    14.
    …by adding street fighting…

    15.
    …by adding raw fighting…

    16.
    …to Special ID’s team grappling techniques…

    17.
Traditional Kung Fu is actually a form of
    technique…

    18.
…that can be mixed (with other martial arts)…actually…

    19.
…that is the definition of MMA…

    20.
…which is to but the best (techniques) together.

    21.
In addition to a surpassing the level of action…

    22.
…as an actor, I hope that each (movie) results
in each action star surpassing (their own expectations).

    23.
I have never took on a role as a triad society
    thug.

    24.
    Director - Action

    25.
    So…

    26.
Initially I thought this role was a challenge

    27.
Bald triad member – someone doesn’t know the
    boundaries of their triad area…

    28.
Of course I consulted with the (previous movies)
of many actors, predecessors and current generation

    29.
    …focusing on successful portrayals…

    30.
I think that in Special ID, the level of action
has increased to the point where it will lead the next trend (of future martial
    arts films)

    31.
    Foreign action films…

    32.
will use this film as a reference point.
