Lau Ching Wan And Louis Koo Look All Heroic And Stuff In New Trailer For The Pang Brothers' INFERNO

Todd Brown, Founder and Editor
If there were ever any filmmakers out there who have managed to squander more goodwill than have Hong Kong directing duo the Pang Brothers, then I'm not entirely sure who that might be. The Pangs started off strong and quickly built a loyal international following but over exposure and agreeing to a ridiculous pace of work that has the duo attempting to release a solo project each plus a Brothers project every year - a move that has dramatically eroded the quality of each film as they simply don't have the time to prepare properly - has whittled away their support to the point that it's been a while since anyone said, "Oooh, a new Pang Brothers film!" with genuine excitement rather than fatigue that translates more as "Oh, another one."

That said ... the duo are still one of the more visually gifted directing acts in Asia, they still manage to draw top tier cast, and every now and then they still turn out a solid title or two. Will firefighter thriller Inferno be one of the good ones? Well, it's got a solid cast in Louis Koo and Lau Ching Wan. Take a look at the new, English subtitled trailer below and let us know what you think.

why does this look like the tower

  • Nice commentary Todd. Those of us in the know have quietly shifted our viewing preferences from Japan to HK/China to SK to Thailand to Vietnam. IMHO, SK is the most reliable at this point in time.

putting Lau Ching Wan in a firefighting movie will only invite comparisons to Johnnie To's Lifeline, which can't pan out well for this.
Criminy, Lifeline had such crazy fire stunts it felt like I was watching an unsuccessful snuff film, but it sure wasn't for lack of trying that Johnnie To didn't roast his cast alive.

This looks almost laughably bad. At least add some camp and make it fun.

    M. Night Shyamalan?

  • Oh, right. Yeah. That'd be one. ;)
