Trailer For Paul Schrader's THE CANYONS Looks Surprisingly Good

Peter Martin, Managing Editor

After a series of jokey retro teasers, disgruntled reports about its rejection from Sundance and SXSW, and plenty of gossip questioning its (thus far unseen) artistic merits, Paul Schrader's The Canyons is ready to see the light of day. To celebrate (?!), it has received a serious trailer that looks quite accomplished, hip, cool, modern, kinda jazzy, kinda Valley porn-y, what have you.

It also has an official, serious synopsis:

Notorious writer Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho) and acclaimed director Paul Schrader (writer of Taxi Driver and director of American Gigolo) join forces for this explicitly erotic thriller about youth, glamour, sex and surveillance. Manipulative and scheming young movie producer Christian (adult film star James Deen) makes films to keep his trust fund intact, while his actress girlfriend and bored plaything, Tara (Lindsay Lohan), hides a passionate affair with an actor from her past. When Christian becomes aware of Tara's infidelity, the young Angelenos are thrust into a violent, sexually-charged tour through the dark side of human nature.

The film will receive a limited theatrical release in the U.S. on Friday, August 2, and will also be available via various VOD platforms. It will receive its world premiere at Lincoln Center in New York on Monday, July 29, at an event that is already sold out; Schrader will appear in person and presumably stem the tide of negative press by the power of his personality. And maybe the movie will be good, too!

"Schrader will appear in person and presumably stem the tide of negative press by the power of his personality."

Well, I´m not so sure.....Schrader seems so introverted, shy and awkward in every interview, of course who cares.....the man has written some great stuff over the years.

"And maybe the movie will be good, too!"

I don´t think so, but I will see it (without downloading it) I have seen some other less then stellar stuff from Schrader, and one more won´t hurt.

This trailer makes the film look more like The Informers(2008), a film based on a novel by Bret Easton Ellis and a screenplay co-written by Ellis.

Could possible bring in some cash I think, providing that the studio supports on VOD, DVD Blu-ray, cable etc.

I´m hoping of course that HBO and Schrader meet up somewhere.......come on Schrader, one biopic for HBO can´t hurt....?

Thanks for the trailer, Mr Martin.

What happened to her? She had promise and then she flipped out and became a lesbian for about 5 minutes and her career just derailed like an amtrak. I hope one day she make a RD jr kind of comeback. I always root for the underdog.

  • Sean Smithson

Stunt casting is annoying. Especially when said cast cannot, you know, ACT.

I always thought that Lindsay Lohan should be a porn star, that is her real calling card, people would respect her more..

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

I actually liked this trailer a lot. If the actual film is just as good as the trailer then I'm probably going to like it.

Liked all the trailers so far!

They can gloss it up in the trailer all they like, but...
