Giuseppe Tornatore's THE BEST OFFER Wins Big at the Embarassing Italian Oscars

Do you know the worst awards show in the world? They are the David di Donatello -- sort of an Italian Academy Awards -- the only awards where the presenters talk more than the winners, where the hosts confuse one category for another, where the guests leave halfway through leaving noticeably empty seats.

They are the only awards in the universe where an actress like Margherita Buy can win six times (and no, she's not the Italian Meryl Streep), where the Career Achievement recipient (this year, the screenwriter Vincenzo Cerami) is absent, where the Foreign Film honours are picked up by distributor representatives, and where the actual Best Italian Film of the year (Bertolucci's Me and You) goes home emptyhanded.

Boring and embarrassing as usual, at least we had a good film like Giuseppe Tornatore's The Best Offer as the Grand Winner this year. Better luck next time, Bernardo. Here's the complete list of winners:

ANIJA - THE BOAT by Roland Sejko: Best Documentary

BALANCING ACT by Ivano De Matteo: Best Leading Actor (Valerio Mastandrea)

THE BEST OFFER by Giuseppe Tornatore: Best Film, Best Director, Youngs' David, Best Art Director, Best Costume Designer, Best Musician

DIAZ - DON'T CLEAN UP THIS BLOOD by Daniele Vicari: Best Producer, Best Editing, Best Sound (Remo Ugolinell, Alessandro Palmerini), Best Visual Effects (Storyteller-Mario Zanot)

DORMANT BEAUTY by Marco Bellocchio: Best non-leading Actress (Maya Sansa)

L' ESECUZIONE by Enrico Iannaccone: Best Short Film

EVERY BLESSED DAY by Paolo Virzì: Best Original Song

A FIVE STAR LIFE by Maria Sole Tognazzi: Best Leading Actress (Margherita Buy)

THE INTERVAL by Leonardo Di Costanzo: Best Debut Director

REALITY by Matteo Garrone: Best Cinematography, Best Make-Up (Dalia Colli), Best Hairdressing (Daniela Tartari)

VIVA LA LIBERTÀ by Roberto Andò: Best non-leading Actor (Valerio Mastandrea), Best Screenplay

This your opinion, but there is no reason to insult these artists and, by the way, i love Streep but i love margherita buy too, she is very good and i make sure to catch all her movies even though i live abroad and italian movies don't get as far as here. She is a different actress than streep but that does mot mean she is not super talented! Embarassing is your article and this is my opinion

  • DavideCoppola

    Wow, that's racist dude!

  • Snoop Lion

How so? The writer is Italian.

  • Francesca

Whining much? About Buy, it's not her fault if she played many times the same role but of our screenwriters and producers, who tend to reproduce the same models of movie when one works. She's a fine actress and in other cinemas, like the French or the Spanish (Almodovar is an admirer of hers, for example), would have got a more complex career. In Viaggio sola though her character is very nuanced and different from basically all the others she's ever played.

About Io e te is a matter of taste. I don't think is the best movie of the year and not many critics considered it a masterpiece in italy or at Cannes (and even the public didn't give it big attention) so the verdict wasn't a surprise. About the ceremony was the usual mess. The problem is that here in Italy Rai want to make out of it a television show instead of a ceremony with some international status.

And about Cerami's absence, you might know, being a journalist (right?) what's going on, so, respect.

  • AF

I couldn't disagree more. The roles she plays in LO SPAZIO BIANCO, GIORNI E NUVOLE and IL SIERO DELLA VANITA' are completely different but she plays them all the same way. I haven't seen VIAGGIO SOLA but I will be shocked if she doesn't give the same performance she also gives in IL ROSSO E IL BLU, MATRIMONI E ALTRI DISASTRI, etc... She has been on autopilot for years.

  • p.h

i have huge respect for the cerami, but still i can't find the point in awarding someone knowing it would be impossible for him to come. what's next, a posthumous career award to monicelli? come on

  • Michela87

Idiot, Cerami has health problems. His daughter even read a letter in front of Napolitano.Look at the number tYou are a total dumb.

  • p.h

everyone knows that cerami is sick, that's why it's a total nonsense to choose him as an awardee. and, idiot you.

  • Walter

i'm familiar with hombrebueno's polemic articles in the italian papers, and he's goddamn right. he's just saying what most of the italian critics think about the davids. the difference is that these critics didn't have the courage to speak clearly, and that's why we need people like hombrebueno: he knows his stuff.

  • Michela87

He know his stuff??? He does not even know that Cerami is not in health and criticizes him for not showing at the ceremony. Walter, Walter, just shut up.

  • p.h

are you an idiot or what? noone is criticizing cerami, i'm criticizing the organization of the awards for choosing him as the honoree although knowing his conditions. please learn to read before you open your mouth, thanks

  • Arianna

Geez, can't stop laughing for all these comments. Can't we see that the aim of the post (that is fuckin' right) weren't some specific facts like the absence of Cerami (hope he'll be better soon) or that Me & You is or is not the best italian film of the last year? The point is that the ceremony was a total mess. Like always, unfortunately :( Aren't we ashamed of these bullshits? Don't we want a ceremony with innovation in the awards, and a show with a dignity, not this ridiculous and low profile tv program?? Go on this way Hombrebueno U_U

  • Dear Journalist,

I hope you have also something against the Academy Awards, the only ceremony where Leonardo di Caprio cannot win any single individual prize in his whole career.

  • p.h

i have something against every single awards show of the planet. but noone is worst than the davids. my favorite part was actually asia argento who greeted the two hosts with a "goodevening, bozos". cool huh

  • Mirko Salvini

She was even worse during Cannes Film Festival closing ceremony

  • p.h

at least she didn't insulted the hosts xd

  • Effe

Seriously, guys? The David di Donatello are one of the most embarassing moments of the italian cinema. Valerio Mastandrea gets 2 awards like he is the italian De Niro (he is no more than a good actor, although monotonous), and he himself was shocked by this overevaluation. Margherita Buy performs herself in every movie since '90, with rare exceptions. And members of the jury forgot to award the new faces of the italian cinema like Tea Falco, Andrea Marinelli, Thony - not to mention the amazing Marco Giallini, never awarded.
The article says the sad, the ugly truth, but yeah the truth. Also Aldo Grasso, critic of an important italian daily, said the same things (but Hombrebueno explained better the problem). It's a fact, the Davids need a revolution.
Oh, and: Buy is more talented than Loren? C'mon, are we joking?!

  • rey

    I totally agree with p.h.
Margherita Buy is the worst actress ever. A real soap-opera actress, playing the same character over and over again, but in different movies. Mastrandrea, no comment. As for Tornatore, Diaz, Cerami: am happy they won the awards (and so is p.h. read his articles "jerks"!) I loved the Bertolucci very much, too bad he had nothing...and I loved "E la chiamano estate" by Paolo Franchi, not even considered by the Donatello... But my heart goes out to REALITY, absolutely the best film of the year.
Oh, and yes the show is lame and pathetic.

  • Andrea

speak about movies not about the cerimony! movies like The Best Offer, Diaz, Viva la Libertà deserve a prize, and I think that Oscar's cerimony is not less boring than this one!

  • p,h

i've spoken about the movies in a previous article, you jerk

  • VikO.

I watch the lists of David di Donatello Awards. Italy is full of new directors and actors who make independent and interesting movies but stupidly the jury and the organizing agents want the same old people to grab everything. The show is the worst I've ever seen, the presenters can't pronunce in a decent way the foreign names (just to say a little).
As for Buy: she is a good actress, but like every actor in italian cinema, she always playes the same role in every film and, yeah, she's overrated. Bruni Tedeschi was way better but she is too french to win again.

  • Mordor

    fuck you

  • Marten

It's this kind of intellectual discourse that makes this site's readers a cut above the rest.

  • p.h

oh, and yeah, Buy has always the same expression in every film she does. kudos. if she really is one of the best actresses of italian cinema, then we're in deep shit

  • Loury

She's the most versatile. Just because you hate her do not mean she's bad.

  • p.h

Buy always plays the role of the frustrated midwife.

some people here doesn't have clear the meaning of "versatility".

    (oh yeah. sophia was versatile).

  • Annarita

Yeah, she was so versatile with a career built by her late husband. Please. Your hate towards Buy is just so stupid. She had this small movie, Viaggio sola, that with a bunch of copies per sala made almost 2 millions and made people go to cinemas just to watch her. In May, a dangerous month for every release. So, what are we talking about? With every other actess that movie would flopped. Buy is the most important and loved Italian actress mostly because people watches her movies. And in a country in which people do not go to movies so frequently, I wouldn't complain if she wins 6 or 50s Davids.

  • p.h

what's the point of your discourse? that Buy should win 50 davids just because people go and watch her movies? i don't understand. it's like giving kristen stewart 50 oscars because she's so loved by the audience..

  • AF

THE most versatile? She is no Licia Maglietta or Angela Finocchiaro.

  • p.h

margherita buy is fine, but come on, 6 davids as best actress? the same number as sophia loren? (not counting the career achievement awards). the double of gina lollobrigida? and that's not over-rating? someone has confuse ideas in here..

  • Felino De Gattis

Why not, after all she omnipresent in any Italian movie production. It's just a matter of odds that she gets so many prizes as best leading actress.

  • Loury

Buy is actually a better actress than Loren.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

...and she was not even awarded for the spectacular performance in this movie.

  • p.h

ok i got it, you're buy's agent. or margherita herself, hahaha

  • Popo_po_zau

The "David di Donatello" are badly organized and the transmission is very boring, as we well know, but maybe you don't know italian cinema. The double award to V.Mastandrea is strange but he's a great actor. And Margherita Buy is one of the best Italian actresses ever, the best of the past 30 years, so says the public and even his fellow actors. Along with her were nominated: Jasmine Trinca and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, good actresses, and then Thony and Tea Falco, two dogs, terrible actresses. Who wrote this article obviously has never seen a movie with Margherita Buy, brava, able to make comedy and drama. Look at her movies before spitting judgments. Today in Italy the great actresses are not so many, are 5-6. Margherita Buy is one of them.

  • AF

Thony was so bad! Her character was already annoying and her poor acting made it even worse. Luca Marinelli was excellent and would have been a far more deserving Best Actor winner, I thought.

  • Popo_po_zau

Thony was nominated only for lack of alternatives.

  • Mirko Salvini

Embarassing ceremony, as usual with Italian Oscars

  • Stefano

Dear "journalist" or "blogger" or whatever you are... About Cerami, he was not there not because he had a BBQ with friends, but because is not feeling good at all (in my most optimistic opinion, he is not going to see next David), that's why Benigni went on stage to receive this prize in his honour... and if you just HAD SEEN this show, you would know that his mood and his words were taking him really close to tears... About Margherita Buy (6 David... come on, use internet, not that difficult!), we have her... happy you have Meryl Streep, maybe other ones are better sometimes, we could talk about that... About people that were not there to receive their prizes... wanna me to tell you how many cases there were in much more important events as Academy Awards, Cannes, Berlin, etc? Come on... ;))) About your opinion about the scandal of prizes... it's just YOURS... IMHO the Tornatore's movie was much more complete and it's not a scandal at all that it won all the most important ones... I would have given some prizes to both Salvatores' and Bertolucci's movies, but I agree with the most important ones 100%... Wanna talk about the quality of "The Hurt locker"? Was it the best movie that year? Better you write about things you know a bit deeper...

  • Giulia

Ho visto anch'io che Benigni era commosso, sai dirmi come sta Cerami?sono alcuni anni che non si fa vedere in giro ad eventi e conferenze e temevo che non stesse bene di salute :(

  • AF

Valerio Mastandrea is a crappy non-actor who now won THREE awards, and yet you whine about a genuinely good (if overpraised) actress getting her sixth? Come on.

  • Mirko Salvini

actually I expected Buy's winning more than Mastrandrea's double strike...but it's true that she's overpraised

  • AF

In her defense, it would be pretty much impossible to receive 15 (!) nominations and not be considered overpraised to some degree. She is a fine actress but without much versatility and tends to play most of her roles in the exact same way.

  • Mirko Salvini

her "magic" escapes me...maybe it's my fault, but 15 nominations from the same institution that never gave a single one to Franca Valeri (just to make an example) is a tad too much!

  • Mostellario

Btw, it's her sixth David. Please just give right infos.

  • Mostellario

Margherita Buy is a great actress. She's actually better than Tea Falco in Me and You. Just give up.
