Chilean Box Office: GLORIA Storms Into The Top 5 Films For May

In some fantastic news for Chilean films, Gloria directed by Sebastián Lelio is the first non-comedy Chilean film in two years that has made top 5 most-seen films for an entire month.

During the month of May, Gloria managed to sell 101,220 tickets since its opening weekend on 9 May, managing to stay among the top 10 every week since then. Gloria has also remained on over 10 screens after one month of release, something almost unheard of for a local film that has garnered so much praise and press from around the world.

Since its premiere at the Berlinale 2013 where its protagonist Paulina García won the Silver Bear for Best Actress, the film has been sold to many distribution companies around the world, including Roadside Attractions for a US release.

Gloria is most surely the headliner to represent Chile at the Oscars at the end of the year. The film was reviewed by Brian Clark on Twitch, which you can read here. This is what he had to say:

I know a film about the trials and tribulations of a 58-year-old divorcee is a tough sell on paper, but it's rare to find a film that explores the melancholy and disappointing aspects of life so expertly, then still manages to leave you feeling like it's all worth it. Take someone you love, or go alone -- you'll leave with a smile on your face regardless.

At the top of the list of the most seen films of May in Chile is Iron Man 3, followed by Fast & Furious 6, Epic, The Croods and in the fifth spot, Gloria. The rest of the top 10 was completed by Evil Dead, Mama, Oblivion and The Host, with Side Effects closing the list.

Yep, GLORIA is fantastic. Glad it's getting its due in its home country. Roadside Attractions will be releasing it in the U.S., so stateside readers should get pumped!
