Universal Plans TIMECOP Reboot. With No Van Damme, Damnit!

Andrew Mack, Contributing Writer
In my mind this is how I picture JCVD took the news that Universal was planning to reboot one of his most successful films without his involvement.

Universal is presently searching out writers to reboot and re-imagine the concept of the 1994 sci-fi actioner Timecop. You will remember that the story of the film is about a police force called the Time Enforcement Commission that regulates time travel. Van Damme played the cop who crosses a crooked politician using time travel to further his career.

Can we just take a second to remind Universal what happened to Sony and the near disastrous performance of a reboot of a much more idolized sci-fi action epic Total Recall. The film bombed domestically here in North America. If it were not for the foreign box office tickets, Sony and affiliated production companies would have never recuperated their costs.

So tread wisely Universal. But. More importantly. Who will do those splits?

I remember watching 'behind closed doors' and seeing how upset JC was when he wasnt asked to be in Bloodsport 2, the guy is a legend, and if it werent for my late father introducing me to his movies, I never would have developed a love of martial arts movies which then progressed to my love of foreign cinema, I'm sure most people in their mid 30's are the same.

Mid-twenties, but same situation, nonetheless. Started with Van Damme, saw Rumble in the Bronx when I was 6, kept up with Jackie for a bit. Then it turned into full-blown fandom in middle school with Chan, Woo, To, and Jet before moving on to broader foreign stuff in high school. But yup, it all traces back to Van Damme, I think.

  • Also: It would appear no Sam Raimi or Rob Tapert involvement in the sequel, either. They produced the original.

  • Amazing choice of image. Nicely done, sir.

    I live to serve, Master.

I am just as pissed. First, that so-called Bloodsport remake, and now this? I wish Van Damme would do a 360 spin kick to the people who even came up with these ideas without his involvement!
