Electrifying First Trailer For Dark Bengali Film MEGHE DHAKA TARA

J Hurtado, Contributing Writer
In 1960, Bengali director Ritwik Ghatak rocked the international film scene with his stark melodrama, Meghe Dhaka Tara (The Cloud-Capped Star). That film, along with the works of Satyajit Ray, put Calcutta on the art-film map, and continues to resonate with film audiences worldwide 50 years later.

Such is that resonance that a new film with the same title approaches the earlier one with a biographical slant, looking into not only its making, but also the circumstances surrounding its production and the state of Ritwik Ghatak as a human being tormented by his own demons. The new film stars Saswata Chatterjee (breakout star of Sujoy Ghosh's Kahaani as the assassin Bob Biswas) as Ghatak, and his performance even in these few minutes of footage is absolutely riveting. The film releases in Kolkata on June 14, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it hit the festival circuit in the coming months as well. Here's the synopsis from Venkatesh Films:
Description
Kamaleswar Mukherjee's Meghe Dhaka Tara is inspired in every way possible from the legendary director Ritwik Ghatak's life. From putting together bits and pieces of his eventful life to using the title of one of his most famous movies to naming the characters from his last film Jukti Tokko Goppo, Kamaleswar's movie is an apt tribute to the great director.

Plot outline
Although inspired from Ritwik Ghatak's life, Meghe Dhaka Tara is neither a biopic on Ritwick nor a remake of Ritwik's famous film. To Kamaleswar, Ritwik is a true star, a legend, with immense contributions to the world of cinema. And yet he is still quite the unsung hero. Hence, he is the "meghe dhaka tara."
