UPDATED with Official Stills - SNOWPIERCER Revealed Through New Passport Images

UPDATED: CJ Entertainment have now officially revealed the stills used in the promotional passports mentioned below.

It's a little hard to overstate how excited we are about Bong Joon-ho's (Memories of Murder, The Host) latest here at Twitch. His new sci-fi Snowpiercer has been getting tongues wagging since it was announced and we've all greedily devoured every new sliver of information that has emerged. Today's fresh haul gives us are biggest look yet into the world of Bong's highly-anticipated English-language debut.

Rather than normal stills, this new set of images comes from promotional character passports that have surfaced in Korea. They reveal Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Octavia Spencer, Ewen Bremner, Jamie Bell, Ed Harris, Song Kang-ho and Ko Asung in character, with director Bong on set thrown in for good measure. It's a little bit of a tease as we're mostly seeing the tail section of the train, which houses the lower class inhabitants of the Snowpiercer. Most of the characters are dressed in rags and looking a bit grimy and weary but there are a few hints at what lies in store.

I'm particularly curious about Bremner's clock necklace and the significance of the metal hoop those suited goons have put his arm through. Harris, who plays the engineer who built the train's engine, appears suitably mysterious in his silhouetted portrait. And what exactly is the bespectacled Swinton telling the tired denizens of the train's back carriages?

  • Ed Harris is the train's creator and leader
  • Tilda Swinton plays the prime minister, the second-most powerful person on the train
  • Song Kang-ho is a lock-picking drug addict in the prison section
  • Ko Asung, as Song's daughter, has the ability to see sound
  • John Hurt is the embattled leader of the tail section
  • Chris Evans is a young revolutionary planning a revolt
  • Jamie Bell is Evans' right-hand man
  • Octavia Spencer plays a mother who searches for her abducted son in the front section
  • Ewen Bremmer is a weak father trying to protect his son

  • Once again, here is the official synopsis from CJ:

Snowpiercer is set in a future where, after a failed experiment to stop global warming, an Ice Age kills off all life on the planet except for the inhabitants of the Snowpiercer, a train that travels around the globe and is powered by a sacred perpetual-motion engine. A class system evolves on the train but a revolution brews.

I can't get past Chris Evans playing any character but Cap. I'm not saying he's a one trick pony, but every time I see him in anything I think Cap. I got my hands on the graphic novel for this. I don't read French very well so I didn't understand much. I'm curious how Bong was exposed to the source material.

I was initially wary about Evans myself but I've warmed to the idea. A lot of that comes down to how much I trust Bong.

As for how he came across it, Bong is a know patron of manhwabangs (literally comic bok rooms). He is said to have stumbled upon Snowpiercer and read it from cover to cover rooted to the spot. I haven't read it, as I don't want to know anything, but I've also heard he's changed quite a lot to suit his purposes, mostly retaining the concept.

This has quickly become my most anticipated of the year. Fingers crossed that it will be at Cannes.
