HK Filmart 2013: Donnie Yen, Media Asia Create Super Hero Films
There was an air of mystery surrounding Tuesday night's "Donnie Yen: Super Hero" press conference at Hong Kong Filmart, but all quickly became clear once the actor took to the stage with Media Asia chief, Peter Lam. Together they unveiled their new production company, Super Hero Films, which will be dedicated to making international action films.
"I wish to incorporate Hollywood technologies into Hong Kong films and introduce more Chinese action stars to the world," FilmBiz Asia quoted Yen as saying, "and breathe new life and create new opportunities for the Hong Kong film industry." Action directors Derek Kwok and Soi Cheang were also in attendance.
Not only is this great news for Action Cinema fans, and Hong Kong martial arts fans in particular, but it is also a sensible move for Yen himself. There has been much speculation over where martial arts Cinema in the city is headed, with precious few standout prospects positioned to take over when Yen and his contemporaries inevitably slow down. For many, Donnie is already past his prime, but Super Hero Films looks to be the perfect platform for him to continue his involvement in the industry, strengthen his international profile, while nurturing talent on both continents.
Sounds like a smart move all round.
