Matsuda Ryuhei, Endo Kenichi And Kitamura Kazuki Joining THE RAID 2: BERANDAL

Andrew Mack, Contributing Writer
Though there does not appear to be an official announcement as of yet word is starting to trickle out about some of the international cast joining the sequel to Indonesian action hit The Raid

Matsuda Ryuhei (Blue Spring, Nine Souls, Nightmare Detective), Endo Kenichi (a Takashi Miike regular) & Kitamura Kazuki (The Japanese lead in the upcoming Mo Brothers film Killers) will be joining the cast of The Raid 2: Berandal as Japanese gangsters. Director Gareth Huw Evans writes about the news...

"I'm absolutely thrilled to have them involved in the project. I've been a  fan of Japanese cinema since childhood and these guys have been a major part of the very best of them so it goes without saying that we can't wait to set them loose on the bloody battlegrounds of a Jakarta gang war!"

So are we.

Around the Internet:
  • Adi

    Pencak Silat VS Karate

  • cant wait. its massive

  • OMG!!!! With this bit of casting news, The Raid 2 is shaping up to be a sequel that truly builds on what its predecessor laid out and will hopefully deliver the goods in a monumental way!

  • jah p

So are any of these guys martial artists?Or is Berandal gonna be more of a gangster/yakuza themed film?

  • Nemuri Kyoshiro

It's going to be a mix of everything/ thrown in some Shakespeare at the park/ Amadeus biopic and you got yourself a Golden Globe Nominee!

  • this should be interesting

  • Alex Smith

    Whoa... This is badassss...

Wonders if they're gonna partake in action scenes or just be yakuzas or what not...

Why are you guys reversing the name order to match the Japanese? In English, Japanese names are written with family name last. You wouldn't write Kurosawa Akira and Ono Yoko, would you?

Great news, though - all three are fabulous actors and will bring a lot to the film.

  • We've made a deliberate choice to follow local name conventions for people (we do the same thing for Koreans) except in cases where someone (say, Joe Odagiri) has specifically adopted a westernized name.

  • hutch

You are making the correct decision. I laughed when Zhang Ziyi became Ziyi Zhang in the West. As if most Westerners would note, understand, and address the differences. Ha.

  • Marc

But Korean (and Chinese) names are routinely westernized with family name first, in all manner of writing and publications. Those are the names western readers are used to seeing (Mao Zedong, Kim Jong-il, Sun Myung-moon, Chiang Kai-shek, not to mention all the filmmakers and actors).

Japanese names aren't, ever (Shinzo Abe, Shintaro Ishihara, Isoroku Yamamoto, aforementioned Yoko Ono, Hideki Matsui, Takashi Murakami, Hayao Miyazaki, Yoshitomo Nara, Seiji Ozawa, Haruki Murakami, Natsuo Kirino, and so on and so on).

I understand the site's choice, but I think it's unnecessarily confusing things since most readers would be able to recognize the family name in "Kurosawa Akira" but not necessarily in "Endo Kenichi or heaven forbid, something more difficult like "Sono Sion". And if most readers of English are accustomed to Japanese names being presented with family name last, then there's bound to be some mistakes if one site starts doing it otherwise, while most other publications stick with the traditional method. I don't think it necessarily shows any more respect to the original naming convention or individuals involved. Japanese are used to their names being reversed in other languages, and that's the way they introduce themselves to foreigners.

Sorry for turning this into something it wasn't meant to be - I didn't mean to be quite so pedantic or annoying. But if I'd wanted to be, I'd also mention that, if you want to get all specific about names, then Russian names on the site should always be presented with a patronymic in the middle of given and family names, and Tamil names presented in reverse order from their Bengali counterparts. And don't even get me started on Spanish names. Whew! :-)

To make it as correct as possible: 「ザ・レード2」に出てる役者達は松田竜平さん、遠藤憲一さんと北村一輝さんになりました。凄いニュースです!笑

Dayy-um! This is the kind of cross cultural bad-assery that I'm talking about. Stick it to the 'wood, Raid team.

The name of the bad-ass actor in the middle is Ken'ichi Endo: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm025...

  • Man, that's a young and pretty shot of Kitamura.
