The Twitch curated Tokyo Drifters: 100 Years Of Nikkatsu screening series kicks off Saturday with a rare screening of Hasebe Yusaharu's Massacre Gun. A hard boiled tale that pits bad men against worse men from the helmer of the Stray Cat Rock series of films, Massacre Gun has been screened with English subtitles just a literal handful of times so don't miss this chance to catch the iconic Shishido Jo (Branded To Kill) in action!

One of three classic gangster films that Nikkatsu superstar Joe Shishido made for the studio in 1967 -- the other two, Branded to Kill and A Colt Is My Passport, are also screening in this series -- Massacre Gun (also known as Slaughter Gun) has scarcely been seen in the West, making this screening a rare treat. Shishido plays mob hitman Ryuichi, who turns on his employers after they force him to kill his own lover. Teaming up with his two brothers, hot-headed club owner Eiji and aspiring boxer Saburo -- each of whom have their own beefs with the mob -- Ryuichi declares war on his former masters, leading to a bloody showdown on a deserted highway. Making his third film for Nikkatsu, future sexploitation specialist Yasuharu Hasebe delivers plenty of hard-boiled noir atmosphere and keeps the tension simmering until it finally explodes in violence.

Not just three Shishido Jo gangster films, but three black-and-white films featuring him as a hitman. And all from 1967! Odd coincidence, and seeing MASSACRE GUN finally in an English-friendly version completes the trilogy. It's amazing how different in tone and story each of the films are, with MASSACRE probably the most conventional of the trio, but also possibly the most hard-boiled.

  • Not entirely a coincidence. ;)

  • i wish i lived in Toronto. I had a chance to see A Colt Is My Passport back in 2008 and consider it one of the coolest film screenings i've had a chance to see. Shishido Jo is fantastic (the actor had plastic surgery that basically turned him into a chipmunk faced badass, before the surgery he was only given hadsome nice guy roles). i can only imagine that Massacre Gun will be great. Can't wait for review.
