EVANGELION 3.0 Breaks Box-Office Records

It might be one of the seven signs of the upcoming apocalypse, but after much anticipation, speculation and trepidation the third title in the current Evangelion reboot actually premiered this weekend in Japan. Named (ironically) Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo, it wreaked a mighty amount of havoc. At the Japanese Box Office, that is!

According to Variety's Mark Schilling, the newest slice of religious science fiction insanity by Anno Hideaki has netted a whopping $13.9 million in its first two days, and is already well on its way to trounce its two predecessors.

On top of that this is actually the strongest opening this year of any film in Japan. Not bad for a production which was rumored to be in trouble, with fans waiting for years and years after the previous installment left cinemas in 2009 already.

On top of that, word-of-mouth on the film is very good, although it left many people very much baffled. Yep, sounds like Evangelion all right...

is it possible to watch it at New York?

Just watched it. You can tell they "redid" a lot of the story from what they may had in mind, because none of the sequences of the "preview of next episode" at the end of 2.0 is actually used in the movie, which let you with a thirst of knowing what happened between 2.0 and 3.0.

They still center the narrative on the characters more than the convoluted conspiracy that moves the whole argument, which for the sake of a story is good, but the feeding of that "backstage" information may feel a bit on the nose.

Visually speaking, it meets expectations... if they just have avoided so much 3D in some scenes, though...

As a bonus, I enjoyed the kaiju short by Studio Ghibli before the movie (a la Pixar) I think here at Twitch you guys called it God Warrior. So, when you have a kaiju short film by Ghibli before the movie, the rest makes much more sense :)

"although it left many people very much baffled" Well, it's good know it confuses other people than us dumb ass Americans. God I remember watching the original series and scratching my head for week after it was over. Thinking to myself: "People actually understand and get this?" Well, gonna go outside and find a stick to play with....

i think people were expecting more angel fights.

  • Is there a Twitch review on the way?

As bad luck will have it we did not have a correspondent on site this weekend, but we'll strive to see it as quickly as possible. Definitely once this film starts traveling festivals...
