The new Evil Dead movie is sure to be one of the most divisive horror films in the coming year. And that is divisive because of the franchise's loyal followers, not because any of us have seen the new film and can judge it by its own merits. Sam Raimi's Evil Dead films are some of the most beloved films in all of horror film history. To make a new seems... sacrilegious.

I don't want to take up too much more of your time because I know you want to watch the trailer and then voice your opinion below. All we ask is that you respect everyone's opinions or I'll throw your ass in the cellar myself.

I'll see it. I think horror is the most easily remade genre. There are only a few stories out there and these remakes could just as easily have been released with different names. Sure people would yell "its just a rip off of Evil Dead" but if the film delivers then no one cares. The question is, Is the baggage that "remaking" a film brings to a film worth the audience that the name brings to the film. I've seen a bunch of remakes that I have really enjoyed in the last few years. Frighnight and 21 Jump St were pretty darn entertaining. They could have totally been released with different names. I think you just need to go in knowing that it is a completely different film. I think that for those calling sacrilege, just imagine the film is called "Book of Death" or something...

While Raimi's original The Evil Dead might not be a comedy, it certainly has a larger-than-life, almost cartoonish quality to it that is somewhat goofy. This looks like an interesting "kids in cabin in woods with demons" flick that will hit many of the same plot points as the older film, but there was a unique tone to that film that appears to be absent here.

Will I see this film? Almost certainly. Will I like it? Who can say. But The Evil Dead is special because of its gonzo, grungy style, which would be almost impossible to replicate and which I'm not seeing here. They're not trying to, either. And that's fine. But I can't imagine anyone falling for this film in the same way as so many have for the original, because it just feels too derivative and straight-faced, while Raimi's version remains completely unique.

Actually, I am seeing it. In the curdled colors and the evil POV and the oneiric, almost Romero pre-code woods (that look as much like CORALINE model work to me as CGI, but I dare not hope). I mean, this is certainly a lot more polished and modern-looking than any previous EVIL DEAD movie, but it seems right in line with DRAG ME TO HELL, and I'm fine with that. If anything, I'm looking forward to how they manage to make all those CABIN IN THE WOODS associations work. If I sniggered here and there at the preview above, it's because the genre was so recently and so thoroughly metastasized.

Yeah, but unique to us. I don't think a filthy 16mm movie is going to have the same 'home movie gone completely terrifying' aspect that the original had on us for today's young adult / teen viewer (which is whom these films are made for and marketed to). To me, the CGI just looks... Roger Rabbit... which is pretty gonzo in it's own way... but to a kid, this may scare the living shit out of them.

I'm impressed. This actually looks like a Raimi film. I love all the little nods to Evil Dead 2 even though the tone is completely different.
As a bonus, the sound design in the trailer is pretty exceptional too.

I think my problem is that I prefer "Evil Dead II" and "Army of Darkness" to the first film. I understand this might be truer to Raimi's original intentions, but honestly, the Prequels were truer to George Lucas's original vision and that certainly didn't make them any good. This leaves the same taste in my mouth as the remake of "The Thing," "Last House on the Left," "Straw Dogs," and "Fright Night." Same basic beats, only a bit slicker and maybe grimier. Finally, and most importantly, what character really stood out in this trailer? And not for cutting their arm off or slicing open their tongue or about to be tree-raped? There might be a cypher for Ash in the new film, but as far as I can tell, there's no Ash and that's a real problem.

I'm see real potential here. People need to keep things in perspective, this might be a great chance to push what the Evil Dead was into realms it never could back in the 80s. I do enjoy the much darker tone, and I'm sure bursts of humor will surface.

I think people are forgetting two things.

One. This film was Written and Produced by Sam Raimi with Production also by Bruce Campbell and Robert Tapert. This is not a Studio Film by far.

2. The first film was made to be as sick and scary as possible, for the money and time they had the original was made to be a SCARY and NASTY film,hell it has TREE RAPE in it, if that is funny I'm sure it was not the filmmakers intentions. People always get Evil Dead 1 and the rest mixed up, yes by today standards Evil Dead 1 is silly but that is due to the dated look and production value.The first film is a DARK film, it is not meant to be funny.

So there, I am not trying to say this is going to be a masterpiece or is going to outshine other horror films but you need to be aware that the reason Sam wants to do this is now that he has the money and clout to do what he originally dreamed up.It has been brought up plenty of times that Sam approached the fellow who is directing this and asked him to help make this film with him, not some studio telling them this is what is expected and how to make it.I will hold my judgement for when this is released and I can actually see it, not knee jerk react to a fucking trailer.

Well, I dreamt of next level claymation over CGI, but yeah, I'm definitely in the "Evil Dead was NOT a comedy" crew. I'm fairly certain the vast majority of people haven't even seen it as it's "too old" / low budget.

I'm not convinced yet...Maybe it's the green hue or the way it looks like just any other horror movie. Or maybe it's just me clinging on to my old classic and not wanting it touched at all. Either way, I'd rather see Evil Dead 4 with Campbell in it.

After seeing the leaked trailer footage I was quite pleased. Now seeing a clear version, I'm meh.

Well I can say one thing I don't like and that is the green hue. Very off-putting. You can see that they have kept the tree rape, chainsaw and cellar. I hope they have some more crazy character designs than what they showed in the trailer. They seemed quite bland and unoriginal. Anyway, I'm sure I will be seeing the actual film before I completely write it off.

I started off immediately hating the very idea of remaking such a horror classic. Then they said the humor was gone and it was going to be straight up horror and I totyally checked out. However, this trailer has potential and much of it looks pretty cool. I'm back in, but still proceeding with extreme caution.

You are correct, sir. The original Evil Dead isn't funny AT ALL. It was deadly serious. Evil Dead 2 is essentially a funny remake of Evil Dead 1.
