Martial Arts Legend Gordon Liu Moves Into Nursing Home After Suffering From Stroke

In September last year, Twitch reported that Gordon Liu, Hong Kong martial arts legend and star of THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN, KILL BILL 1 & 2 plus numerous other films, was admitted into hospital following a head injury. At the time, there were a lot of speculations surrounding the cause and nature of Liu's injury.

As it turned out, Liu had a major stroke that left him completely paralysed on the right side of his body. He has been receiving rehabilitation since the stroke and has recently moved into a nursing home. He has refused to see anyone from the entertainment industry, except for Eric Tsang and Leung Ka Yan who visited him recently as representatives of the Hong Kong Performing Artistes Guild.

Tsang told the press following the visit that Liu has ongoing weakness in the right side of his body, and the Guild is helping to cover the cost of his medical treatment and accommodation. Gordon Liu has asked Tsang to pass on the message that he will actively work towards improvement and for people not to worry about him.

We are saddened by the news and wish Mr Liu a full and speedy recovery.

I can only imagine what it must be like for someone so physical to suffer such a setback. Even more than the average person, when you're used to daily exercise and moving with the fluidity, grace, and strength that Liu always wielded, I'd guess that depression is the greater challenge for Liu as he adjusts to his suddenly limited abilities.

I had a cousin who suffered this exact same side effect when she was very young (she had a tumor which was successfully operated on but she lost most mobility on one side of her body due to the damage done). She's since managed to recover almost in full, but it took a very long time, and she was significantly younger than Liu. But she also didn't have his years of discipline or training. It's not impossible to recover, but it's a long road. From her experience, I'd say the hardest part was staying motivated when your body seems to be working against you constantly, in a way most of us never experience.

All the best to Gordon and I hope he can recover a balance and peace with his new physicality.
