Long Rumored 13 BELOVED Remake Moving Ahead With Daniel Stamm Directing

Todd Brown, Founder and Editor
Back in 2006 - when the Thai film industry was firing on all cylinders with action, horror, arthouse films and thrillers all making a splash on the world stage - one of the most talked about came from 20-something wunderkind writer-director Chookiat Sakveerakul.

Titled 13 Beloved the film was a hard edged thriller, a sort of death by a thousand cuts that set a series of tasks in front of its protagonists. They started simple at first - kill a fly - but each paid more than the last provided that you kept going. The core question was simple enough - if you start with small enough sins will you be able to recognize / withdraw when things get serious - and the execution so strong that it became a huge buzz title on the festival circuit.

Dimension films would release the film in the US as 13 Game Of Death with the Weinsteins snapping up remake rights as well. But the remake failed to appear - as did, incidentally, a long talked about Thai sequel titled 14 Beyond with that project never yet delivering a filmable / affordable script and Chookiat now locked into a career making critically lauded and commercially successful romances.

Well, no word on the sequel but the remake is moving ahead.

Titled Angry Little God, the project has attached The Last Exorcism director Daniel Stamm. IM Global will finance and handle international sales with Dimension distributing in the USA. Stamm also has ghost story The Darkness on his upcoming slate.

Actually, there is some work being done on the sequel, 14 Beyond. Maybe we'll see it next year.

  • I'd love if that were the case but Sahamongkol have had it on and off the slate for YEARS and it was off at the last film market in Cannes. Didn't see a mention of it on any of the materials. I know Chookiat has been writing but my understanding is that the early versions were too ambitious and expensive and couldn't get approved.
