THE RAID Director Prepping US Gangster Film

Todd Brown, Founder and Editor
The Raid director Gareth Huw Evans has a busy few years ahead of him. Riding the success of his Indonesian martial arts film Evans has been busily assembling a slate of upcoming projects as writer, producer and director and another big one has just dropped into place. But before we get to that, a tally of what is already out there:

Evans will shortly go into production on Safe Haven, a short film project he co-wrote and will co-direct with Macabre co-director Timo Tjahjanto. After that will come the sequel to The Raid. After that? Well, back in Indonesia he will produce a pair of action films - The Night Comes For Us, One Good Thing - one of which (The Night Comes For Us) he is co-writing again with Tjahjanto, who will also direct.

And then, of course, there is the question of English language projects. Announced back in May was true life, UK based heist film Breaking The Bank, which is set up at Universal. And now there's another added to the list.

Though the title has not yet been revealed, Deadline have broken word that Media Rights Capital are backing another English language project from Evans, a film they are referring to as an action drama. Evans is not able to share a great deal of detail about the film yet but we reached out to him and he was able to at least tell us this:

This has been a dream project that existed solely in my head for over six years. It's something I've dreamt about so I'm absolutely thrilled to have found a US partner with whom I can develop and finally bring it to the screen. This is my take on the American gangster genre, a momentary step away from martial arts. I will absolutely be back doing Silat films in Indonesia but for now it's a world of guns, bullets, and, who knows ... maybe a hammer or two.
