Superstar Rajnikanth Conquers Japan! New ROBOT Trailer! New Release!

J Hurtado, Contributing Writer
A fact that is little known in the west is that Superstar Rajnikanth, the biggest movie star in India, is something of an icon in the land of the rising sun. That's right, since the Japanese release of his film Muthu in 1998, Rajni has had quite the following in Japan, where there are dozens of fan clubs all over the place.

As a result, Superstar's last film, the megahit record breaker Enthiran (Robot) recently enjoyed a Japanese Cinema release. The article in the links below from The Japanalyst states that the film did pretty well at the box office, though I've had a hard time corroborating that information. However, whether or not the film's box office numbers are up to snuff or not became irrelevant when I found this...

That's right! Our favorite South Asian hero got his very own kickass Japanified movie trailer for Robot (which was released in its Hindi dubbed version in Japan), complete with shouting and huge graphics. Hooray!

So, for all of you Twitch readers in Japan, the film is STILL opening in theaters across the country, I suggest you find one and grab a seat. You're in for the ride of your life!

"the biggest movie star in India, is something of an icon in the land of the rising sun."

Mr Hurtado, does this mean that, if one has a major moviestar from india in an hit film, the rest of asia will also watch it..?

I always thought countries in asia had clearly segmented markets that was disconnected from each other.....

Typically, no. Rajnikanth is a force unto himself, and an aberration in the cross pollination of Indian cinema, certainly south Indian cinema. While there are Indian film houses around the world, they typically only exist in places with sizable Desi (Indian ex-pat and/or ethnic Indian) populations. For example, there are many Indians in a place like Hong Kong, which is a giant Asian crossroads, there are many Tamil speaking Indian ex-pats in Singapore and other southeast Asian nations, so they have Indian theaters, Indian popular cinema making it to Japan is quite strange, though Robot has made an impact all over the. This article could just as easily have been about the film's release in South Korea earlier last year.

    I understand.....Thanks Mr Hurtado.

The reason I ask is that Filmthreat had article about Hollywood increasingly invest in indian cinema trying to reach Desi audiences all over the world.

I thought rest of asia was coming along, but as always some blockbuster generates cash world over.
