Drafthouse Films Joins The Ranks Of Subscription Services With The DRAFTHOUSE ALLIANCE

J Hurtado, Contributing Writer
Today, Drafthouse Films announced that they are the latest independent distributor to try out a subscription model for their films named Drafthouse Alliance. I, for one, and psyched about the opportunities that brings for both Drafthouse Films and members of the Alliance. The subscription model has been floating around for a while, most notably with smaller labels like Film Movement who are celebrating their 10th anniversary this year, and Oscilloscope Films, whose Circle of Trust program is very much like the Drafthouse Alliance plan.

With both services, film fans are able to pay one flat rate for the next ten home video releases on each slate. With the Drafthouse Alliance, this means that new subscribers will be able to choose one of the two current releases (The FP and Bullhead) on either Blu-ray or DVD, as well as having the next nine releases delivered to their door with no ordering or price shopping necessary. As an added value to the service, Drafthouse Alliance members are entitled to a 720p HD digital download of each film, as well as a 320 kbps soundtrack download of the film's soundtrack when available.

Now, you may be thinking, "What if I don't like the films that Drafthouse Films acquires?" All you need to do to answer that question is check out the titles currently in their collection. The FP may be controversial, but Bullhead and Klown have been universally praised, Comin' At Ya 3D is a buttload of fun, and I'm very excited to see The ABCs of Death, The Miami Connection, and Electric Boogaloo. There doesn't seem to be much to worry about in terms of curation.

If all that wasn't enough, there are also the exclusive invites to Alamo Drafthouse events around the country that are available to Drafthouse Alliance members. Granted, they can't fly you to the events when they occur, but if you're in driving distance, the Drafthouse puts on some of the most insanely cool film related events in the world. All this for around $125, which translates to around $13 per Blu-ray of each film, and that price includes all shipping costs as well as all the cool shit listed above.

I hope that more labels go this route, it is a great way to show direct support to the people who care about films enough to treat them with respect, and it's a great fucking deal!
