Gary Oldman Is The Top Grossing Actor Of All Time

Todd Brown, Founder and Editor
Ladies and gentlemen, if the deep thinkers at The Hollywood Reporter have done their math correctly, sometime in the recent past Gary Oldman became the top grossing actor of all time. The statement is tucked away as a footnote in a casting announcement - which hardly seems to be the sort of attention it deserves - but it warms my heart to see that such a statement could be applied to a performer like Oldman who has always seemed to prize consistent quality over having the biggest, flashiest parts in the biggest, flashiest movies. Though, obviously, he's certainly been in some big ones.

His recent stints in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight movies and the Harry Potter franchise are what pushed Oldman over the top - and I would be curious to know if it was Harrison Ford that he bested or if someone had toppled Ford from that perch first - but Oldman's success lies not in chasing trends but in simply being very, very good at what he does.

Every time I read something like this I keep thinking the top grossing actor of all time has to be some extra who happened to be in all the recent Hollywood blockbusters. Oh and how about a list of the top grossing best boys or second unit camera assistants? These lists are nothing more than meaningless trivia.

The name I've seen at the top of the list most frequently is Frank Welker.

  • J Hurtado

I've always seen Sam Jackson on top of that list

  • I imagine Sam will re-assert himself there off the back of The Avengers but according to THR it's Oldman right now.

  • J Hurtado

A very good point, though with Dark Knight Rises coming up, it's probably a wash
