First MANIAC Remake Trailer is NSFW and Rather Creepy ...

There's all sorts of exciting stuff happening at Cannes this year and not just in the arthouse sector, as this trailer for the Franck Khalfoun remake of "Maniac" shows. Bill Lustig's original was sleazy and gory and well, guess what: so is the remake apparently.

Thanks to Firstshowing.net (link) we now get a good uncensored glimpse at the film and I like what I see, with especially Elijah Wood not even looking half as gimmicky as I feared he would.
I'm still on the fence about this remake, but this footage sure keeps me interested.

Elijah Woods plays a man whose unexpected budding relationship with a beautiful woman awakens a very disturbed serial killer within him.

I'm eagerly awaiting the first reviews but until then here is a big part of a trailer, with a promise of a better version soon.

I hate remakes and might be one of the most obsessed fans for Maniac. Hence, I'm shocked this looks promising. It seems more artistic, odd, and probably should have been directed by Aja. He did destroy Craven with his remake of "The Hills Have Eyes." And matched Dante with his hilariously absurd and tongue-in-cheek Piranha remake.

I do wish he'd chill with remakes but the guy made Haute Tension, and regardless of how you feel about that film... watch Craven's original. It's lame, dated, and pure cheese while pretending to be a serious genre film.

Seen this many times on many episodes of Law & Order SVU.. Cinematography seems to be about the same as well! :-/

totally fail to see what this remake can possibly add.....apart from some money in the bank for the producers

and after seeing this trailer even more so

    a) it won't have the raunchy cheap vibe of the original (since it's a remake and hence self conscious) b) Elijah is simply not such an obnoxious looking guy as Joe Spinell

    Hmmm...

In their remarks, Joshua and Shelagh may have pointed out exactly why the producers chose to remake a known property rather than create a new "original" film about a serial killer with a mother-compulsion and weird mannequins.

  • Shelagh M. Rowan-Legg

I am just so tired of films about men with mommy issues who become serial killers. I feel like it's part of a bad fetish to watch beautiful women get mutilated and killed. It's old, it's boring. And I say that as a fan of Aja. He's worth more than this cliche.

  • Joshua Chaplinsky

I'm intrigued, but isn't the whole 'mannequins are weird' thing a little over used?

  • James Dennis

Khalfoun's P2 was pretty solid, and Aja has a good history with remakes so I see no reason why this shouldn't be pretty good too.

How long before the remake bitching starts?

  • Ard Vijn

I'm going out on a limb here, not having seen the film yet, but I think the big twist is going to be that he himself is the killer.
