Chicago to Get Rarer Than Rare Screening of Restored NIGHTBREED (THE CABAL CUT)!!!!

This is major.

Clive Barker's film Nightbreed is famous for being butchered at the last minute by 20th Century Fox. Besides trimming out all the violence (which is usually almost a character in and of itself in any Clive Barker film), the hacks also saw to it that the role of Suzi Quatro (best known as Leather Tuscadero from the show Happy Days) wound up completely on the editing floor.

Well Nightbreed has undergone a complete restoration! Can you take 155 minutes of Barkeree goodness?!

ANNE BOBBY (star of NIGHTBREED in Person!)

Restoration Director Russell Cherrington will also be on hand to discuss their plans for bringing NightBreed The Cabal Cut to BluRay and DVD.

Obviously a big, special edition would be ideal, but it's been kinda eye-opening the quality of the MOD (Manufacture on Demand) discs that have been coming out of WB, etc recently. Seems there's also been a lot of crossover there between studio titles from the original production company and who currently owns the rights - ie. WB releasing MGM pics, etc.

All the same, as you noted the situation there is quite different - just curious if they face any legal issues with a theatrical presentation of a print for the same reasons.

The everpresent problem has been that there are three parties that need to work together to make a restoration possible. Morgan Creek owns the copyright to the movie, WB has the home video rights and would thus be releasing the DVD/Blu-Ray, but the raw film material is still somewhere in the Fox vaults. So it's an expensive and complicated matter to just get the material out of storage, clean it up, and create a new master, and for MC and WB, it's been a debate as to whether the expense would pay off in DVD sales.

Soooo, any reason this wouldn't eventually hit dvd/blu-ray...or is it a matter of rights between the owners of the theatrical cut and this version?

I still remember seeing this opening day in the theater with about 5 other people in the whole place. I think i was the only one that "got it". Here's hoping that this finally sees the light of day outside of these random screenings.
