Tribeca 2012 Preview: Galas & Competitions

Well folks, it's just about Tribeca time. New York's big Spring fest kicks off this Wednesday, the 18th. TFF2012 has quite the diverse lineup this year and we're mobilizing the troops to bring you the festival news, features, and reviews you've come to expect from the Twitch team. To start things off, we'll take a look at the Gala films as well as some of the films in the World Narrative and World Documentary Competitions. Enjoy and check back for much more soon!

Galas



THE FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT
Nicholas Stoller's Get Him To The Greek follow-up is this Apatow-mantic comedy starring Emily Blunt, Rhys Ifans, Alison Brie, Chris Pratt, Kevin Hart, Chris Parnell, and Mindy Kaling alongside co-writer Jason Segel.


THE AVENGERS
Tribeca's closing night film is Marvel's superhero magnum opus directed by Joss Whedon. Tribeca has decided to give away tickets to New York's police, firefighters, military, and first responders instead of selling any public seats.


BENJI
The centerpiece gala for Tribeca's ESPN Sports Film Festival is this gunned-down basketball docu by music video directors Coodie and Chike.

World Narrative Competition



BEYOND THE HILL
Turkish filmmaker Emin Alper won both praise-a-plenty and a Best First Feature award at Berlin for this rural drama.


JACK AND DIANE
Juno Temple and Riley Keough star as lovers in Bradley Rust Gray's (The Exploding Girl) dark genre romance.


POSTCARDS FROM THE ZOO
This poetic film about a girl who grows up in a zoo by Indonesian director Edwin certainly looks like a trip.


UNIT 7
Spanish director Alberto Rodriguez tries his hand at this period cop thriller after receiving Goya nominations for both his last films After and 7 Virgins.


THE GIRL
David Riker follows-up La Ciudad by turning Abbie Cornish into a coyote in this cross-border drama.



UNA NOCHE
Director Lucy Malloy spent years living in Havana to research this tale of Cuban teens who dream of a new life.


FIRST WINTER
Brooklyn hipsters try to find utopia but find mostly strife during an apocalyptically cold winter in the country in Benjamin Dickinson's drama starring Lindsay Burdge, Paul Manza, Jennifer Kim, Samantha Jacobs, Matthew Chastain, and Kate Lyn Sheil.

World Documentary Competition



WAVUMBA
This glorious looking docu by Dutch director Jeroen van Velzen explores a Kenyan fishing village.


HIGH TECH, LOW LIFE
Stephen Mang's docu explores the growing ranks of China's anti-censorship guerilla bloggers.


FAME HIGH
Go inside a Los Angeles arts-focused high school for all the trials, tribulations, and auditions with this follow-up to the Oscar nom'd The Garden by Scott Hamilton Kennedy.


PLANET OF SNAIL
This Korean docu explores the touching love story of a deaf and blind man and a woman with a spinal disability.


THE WORLD BEFORE HER
This Indian docu explores gender roles through the Miss India beauty pageant and a women's Hindu fundamentalist movement.
