JAWS is coming out from the depths, finally heading for Blu-Ray August 14th

Jason Gorber, Featured Critic
Universal Pictures is in the midst of celebrating it's 100th Anniversary, and there's one title that fans of HDshinydisc have been waiting for almost since the inception of the format. Finally, after years of rumours and false starts, fans of the big fish are getting their wish: Steven Spielberg's Jaws is swimming home on August 14th, 2012.

The original 35mm elements have been newly scanned, and the sound remixed to 7.1 under the Supervision of Spielberg himself. While there's no official indication that the original soundtrack will also be included, I'll not begrudge a proper multichannel mix. I cannot wait to hear that magnificent theme blare, the subwoofer rattling my insides as the contrabasses saw away.

In addition to the audio and video remastering, we'll also get the following supplements:

  • Two-hour The Making of Jaws documentary
  • Jaws: The Restoration
  • From the Set
  • Jaws Archives (photos, storyboards, , and marketing materials, as well as a special segment on the Jaws phenomenon
  • deleted scenes
  • outtakes
  • original theatrical trailer
  • an new feature length doc, The Shark is Still Working: The Impact & Legacy of Jaws
The previous DVD release had a truncated version of the Making-of doc, which was originally produced for the Laserdisc set(!). Excellent to see Uni including as many of the vintage supplemental materials as they could.

I'm especially excited for the Shark is Still Working doc - spearheaded by fans, narrated by Scheider with the participation of most of the key players, it's inclusion as part of the official canon of JAWS releases is hopefully a testament to its quality.

Update
Universal has put on Youtube an 8 minute clip on the restoration - check it out!
