SUNDANCE 2012: LCD Soundsystem's SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS Trailer!

Andrew Mack, Contributing Writer
You always want to go out on top of your game; to forever be remembered for your greatness. Few entertainers know how and when to do that, allowing their careers and influence to tumble into mediocrity. From the trailer for the upcoming documentary SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS, directed by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace, it would appear that LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy left little shadow of a doubt he left with not a whimper but a roar.

On April 2nd 2011, LCD Soundsystem played its final show at Madison Square Garden. LCD frontman James Murphy had made the conscious decision to disband one of the most celebrated and influential bands of its generation at the peak of its popularity, ensuring that the band would go out on top with the biggest and most ambitious concert of its career. The instantly sold out, near four-hour extravaganza did just that, moving the thousands in attendance to tears of joy and grief, with NEW YORK magazine calling the event "a marvel of pure craft" and TIME magazine lamenting "we may never dance again."  SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS is both a narrative film documenting this once in a life time performance and an intimate portrait of James Murphy as he navigates the lead-up to the show, the day after, and the personal and professional ramifications of his decision.

The film is set to have its World Premiere on January 22nd at Sundance. You will find the trailer after the break. It is a moving piece of film making indeed. You really sense the emotional impact of the evening not only on Murphy and his bandmates but also those in the crowd that night. And it is also worth noting that filmmakers Spike Jonze was among the camera operators for this project.
