Two of the top genre films of 2011 have made a big splash already at this years American Film Market, signing multiple territories over the last two days. Monster Brawl and Exit Humanity, both produced and sold by Foresight Features, arrived at the market on the heels of an outstanding film festival run which began in July at Montreal's Fantasia where Monster Brawl picked up an audience award. Exit Humanity recently had its American premiere at Screamfest LA and both films had previously been selected to genre fests in Sweden, Austria, France, Norway and Toronto After Dark before playing at the prestigious Sitges Film Festival.
Monster Brawl is a comedy-horror-action film directed by Jesse T. Cook that features a graveyard wrestling tournament which pits classic monsters against one another in an ultimate fight of the living dead. It stars Dave Foley, Lance Henriksen, Art Hindle and wrestling and MMA icons Jimmy Hart, Robert Maillet, Herb Dean and Kevin Nash.
Exit Humanity is a dark and dramatic zombie tale set after the American Civil War and framed by an old journal read by the stoic voice of Brian Cox. It features horror icons Bill Moseley and Dee Wallace along with character actor Stephen McHattie and was directed by John Geddes. Both films were produced by Foresight Features, a company owned by Cook, Geddes and sales partner Matt Wiele, who are in the midst of a ten-film slate of high-quality genre fare.
"We wanted to make a statement with our first two films. Producing two films back-to-back was a monumental challenge, and a harrowing feat, and we are thrilled with the outcome. As the market evolves, we are very pleased to have produced 2 of the top 20 independent genre films of the 2011. We wanted to keep both films within the horror genre but have them be at opposite ends of the spectrum. From the deals we have seen at AFM, comedy horror and zombie survival horror are two big sellers this year." -Matt Wiele, Producer and Head of Sales at Foresight Features.
Monster Brawl was picked up for US release by Mark Ward at Image Entertainment, adding to their horror catalogue which includes Laid to Rest 2 and Chillerama. The domestic deal was arranged and serviced by Nate Bolotin of XYZ Films, who is also handling the USA sale of Exit Humanity, which will be announced this week. Both films were acquired in Canada by Rob Herholz of Anchor Bay Canada, and in Germany by Splendid Film Gmbh, Matt Wiele having arranged both deals. Another deal was added late last night that saw Exit Humanity go to Metrodome in the U.K, where it joins genre hit Stakeland and House of the Devil. "We are delighted to be working with Foresight Features and see great things ahead for the UK release of Exit Humanity", said Metrodome's head of acquisitions, Joel Kennedy.
