Evangeline Lilly To Play New Character Created For Peter Jackson's HOBBIT Films
Fans have known for quite some time that there would need to be new material created for Peter Jackson's upcoming film adaptation of JRR Tolkein's The Hobbit. Splitting the story into two films virtually guaranteed that. And the belief, for a number of reasons, has long been that the new material would likely be a story centered upon events in Mirkwood, events hinted at in The Hobbit and other Tolkein works, but never actually spelled out. And that assumption would appear to have been confirmed with word that Lost star Evangeline Lilly has been cast as Tauriel, a woodland elf character created specifically for the films. Also added to the cast is Barry Humphries, who will be playing the Goblin King.
Word that Orlando Bloom was in The Hobbit as Legolas gave ample reason to assume that Mirkwood would play a much larger role on the screen than in the books and the creation of a major character from that part of the story would appear to confirm it.
