SONS OF ANARCHY Star Charlie Hunnam Takes Lead In Del Toro's PACIFIC RIM

It's been a difficult year for Guillermo Del Toro. After making the decision to walk away from The Hobbit after putting in years of pre-production it appeared his long desired adaptation of HP Lovecraft's At The Mountains Of Madness was finally going to move ahead. The bad news is that fell apart as well. The good news is Del Toro didn't miss a beat, shifting focus immediately to big budget scifi Pacific Rim.

Plot details on this one are still scarce, with all that's really being said is that it's an alien invasion pic heavily influenced by Japanese mecha based anime. For those unfamiliar, think humans piloting giant humanoid robots to fight off an alien incursion.

We do, however, now know that Del Toro has settled on his lead and it is Charlie Hunnam from Sons Of Anarchy. And while my viewing of Sons Of Anarchy has been limited to just a handful of episodes - there just aren't enough hours in the day - this strikes me as being a very strong choice, Hunnam being a very strong performer who can nicely balance physical ability with some emotional depth.

Pacific Rim has been fast tracked to production so expect the news to keep flowing.
