Trailer of Adventures of Rolli 3D (Quest for a Heart)

Well, this post is a kind of answer to discussion about the future of cinema and 3D technology. I will describe situation on one example.

Animation feature Adventures of Rolli, also known as Quest for a Heart on DVDs in America and Rollin Sydan in Finland, was released 2 years ago. It is based on some unknown Finnish book and was produced by Moscow-based studio with financial support from Finnish side. Animation of the movie is a mix of 3D and usual drawn animation.

The movie gathered a little in theaters, simply because Russian audience was not familiar with this story and because it was released in limited distribution on 219 screens.

However, 2 years later Russian possessor of rights remade it and released the movie in 3D on 100 screens and it gathered almost the same amount of money as 2D version, even though the movie was available on DVDs for a long time and in Internet on torrent sites of course. This is a good example that 3D movies can get much more than usual 2D movies.

Just as I wrote in the post about the teaser of upcoming 3D flick Dark World, Russia will probably be producing more 3D flicks than any European country for one simple reason - piracy and torrents, that are widespread in Russian internet and that publish screen copies of movies on other day after release in theaters. 3D technology in theaters is a good instrument against bootlegging.

And news bring more and more evidences, proving that tendency:
1). Russian 3D animation feature Belka and Strelka about living creatures that had been in the space for the first time in the world and returned back to Earth, will be released in 3D Digital and Real 3D.
2). Central Partnership announced in November that Russian fantasy flick Dark World will be released in 3D.
3). Long-awaited horror adventure Viy was delayed because producers decided to convert it in 3D and some scenes were re-shot in Czech Republic.
4). Timur Bekmambetow announced that his second Hollywood flick Wanted 2 will be in 3D, and possible continuations of Black Lightning will be in 3D also.
