NEWS
========================

Just like every year around this time, Cine21 got together some of the most important names in the industry, and asked them their top 50 most important figures in Chungmuro. Gone are the days when Kang Woo-Suk, who won this particular 'ranking' 9 years in a row, would just prepare to pay everyone drinks on the night the list was announced. As the Korean industry matures and its production structure assumes some Hollywood-like models, there'll be an increase in 'faceless names' in the list, owners of theater chains, distribution companies and powerful producers, people who rarely come out and talk to the press, but make the big decision behind the scenes. Nice to see Cha Seung-Jae, head honcho of Sidus (now SidusFNH), who's always been one of Korea's best producers and has great taste in films, on top of the list. And once again Kang Woo-Suk gets the second spot, after dropping out of Cinema Service's leadership and doing things on his own (officially).

Lee Joon-Ik made the biggest jump, as expected, with his 12+ Million tickets for 왕의 남자 (The King and The Clown), just like Jang Jin, whose role as a producer and co-founder of KnJ Entertainment with Kang Woo-Suk will probably allow him to rise up the rankings in the coming years. As for actors, as always Jang Dong-Gun grabs the top spot, although people like Ahn Sung-Gi and Choi Min-Shik still remain high for their involvement in the Screen Quota protests. And even the President gets a nod, a negative one that is, as his 'broken promise' created quite a few headaches in the industry, which will surely grow from July. [Cine21]

One of the most painful pages in Korean history was written on May 18, 1980, when the Gwangju Massacre grabbed the headlines. Students in protests against the Jeon Du-Hwan 'administration' were assaulted by armed forces who responded violently to their demonstrations. More than two thousand people (although government back then was saying they were closer to 300, figure which was contested by other sources years later) died between May 18 and 27, with many more injured, and emotional and psychological damages impossible to calculate. Although a few films and TV Dramas have tried to deal with the issue, most notably last year's 제5공화국 (The Fifth Republic), the classic 1995 SBS Drama 모래시계 (The Sandglass), Lee Chang-Dong's 박하사탕 (Peppermint Candy) and obviously the 1996 Jang Sun-Woo masterpiece 꽃잎 (A Petal), it's still very difficult to see it represented in popular media, as it's still fresh on people's minds.

But just like social satires dealing with the Park Jung-Hee regime started emerging in the last few years, with 효자동 이발사 (The President's Barber) and 그때 그사람들 (The President's Last Bang), 5/18 will get its own film pretty soon, and casting has been announced already. Ahn Sung-Gi, Lee Yo-Won from 패션 70s (Fashion Seventies) and the new star in town, Lee Joon-Gi of 왕의 남자 (The King and The Clown) will in fact lead 화려한 휴가 (A Great Holiday), which will use the most terrible week in Gwangju history as its main background. The film, directed by Kim Ji-Hoon of 목포는 한구다 (Mokpo, Gangster's Paradise) and produced by Kihwek Shidae, will star Lee Joon-Gi as a taxi driver, Ahn as the owner of the taxy company and a political activist in the Gwangju Democratic Movement, and Lee Yo-Won as his daughter. Rest of the excellent cast features Park Cheol-Min, Kim Sang-Kyung, Cha In-Pyo, Lee Han-Wi, Song Jae-Ho and Na Moon-Hee. Slated for a Spring 2007 release, the 10 Billion Won blockbuster A Great Holiday starts shooting in mid June. [Film2.0, Yahoo Korea]

A few weeks ago Ryu Seung-Beom announced his next role would be as a 'trash eating zombie', so Ryu Seung-Wan's Zombie Action flick 야차 (Yacha), which will start shooting later this year, seemed to be what he was hinting at. After all, even though the brothers recently announced they'd spend some time 'separated', to try and break the usual stigma that they need each other to function properly -- stigma which, just taking a quick look at 사생결단 (Bloody Tie) and 짝패 (The City of Violence) seems silly at best -- it's not like Zombie flicks are a popular genre in Korean Cinema, and Yacha was the only one on the horizon until now. The truth is Ryu will not star on his brother's next film, but the potentially great omnibus project 멋진 신세계 (Doomsday Book).

The 3.5 Billion film, produced by newcomers Lucy Film, will feature Kim Jee-woon of 달콤한 인생 (A Bittersweet Life) directing Chapter 1, a Sci-Fi Drama; Im Pil-Sung of 남극일기 (Antarctic Journal) will direct Chapter 2, a Horror; finally, Han Jae-Rim of 연애의 목적 (Rules of Dating) will take care of the final chapter, a Sci-Fi Musical. Ryu's zombie role will be in the horror by Im Pil-Sung, which if you've seen Antarctic Journal and especially his short films should prepare you for what kind of horror Director Im will give us. The film will start shooting from next month, and is set for an early 2007 release. [My Daily]

The life of legendary kisaeng 'Myeongwol' Hwang Jin-Yi has always been one of Korean Cinema's favourite stories to tell. From Bae Chang-Ho's 1986 version played by the great Jang Mi-Hee, to the straight to video 1996 one starring Ye Ji-Won in the lead role, there's a good dozen works using the life of one of Joseon's most controversial and popular figures. The latest in line is Jang Yoon-Hyun's 황진이 (Hwang Jin-Yi), which seems to have finally found its lead. The director of 접속 (The Contact), 텔 미 썸딩 (Tell Me Something) and 썸 (Some) and the producers Cine2000 offered the part to Song Hye-Gyo, who debuted in films with last year's 파랑주의보 (My Girl & I), after becoming a huge star all over Asia thanks to her roles in TV Dramas like 가을동화 (Autumn Fairy Tale), 올인 (All In) and 풀하우스 (Full House).

Although nothing has been signed yet, as Song and her management are looking at the synopsis of the film, it's expected she will sign a contract in the next few weeks. Rumours were circulating about Jang's choices, going from the plausible (Soo Ae) to the ridiculous (Jeon Ji-Hyun). Ridiculous obviously because this is not your average melodrama role, but a more 'mature' one, which would change Jeon's image too drastically and require her to risk losing her 'pure' image (which means lots of CF contracts, obviously). But doubts remain nonetheless, as Song is not exactly known for her acting skills, even though Jang got a pretty surprising performance out of Go Soo in Some, so he might repeat himself here. The film, unlike its predecessors, will focus on Hwang's life before her days as an 'entertainer', or at least the period which led her to make that decision, and is adapted from an award winning 2002 novel by North Korean writer Hong Seok-Joong.
